How Much Responsibility Should Schools Bear?
I was very intrigued to read this article today: Milwalkee Judge Orders Compensatory Education on Education Weekly. The gist is that the Milwalkee Public Schools made some sort of mistake about providing special education services to students between 2000 and 2005 and now are being ordered to rectify the errors. They are to find affected students and offer them compensatory education.
I have to wonder if other districts will now be found liable as well. When I speak to families with special education students, and when I work with adults who came through local special education programs, I am often struck by how little the parents and the students understand the programs they are using. Many don’t realize that their Special Education diploma is little more than an attendance certificate, and that it won’t get them into a college or help them with employment after they graduate. They don’t realize how far off the standard curriculum they really are.
This is a problem because when the students graduate, they find their options to be extremely limited. Many decide to attempt their GED to compensate, then find that services are not adequate to help them achieve their goals.
What is your opinion? How was your high school experience? Did you get what you needed, or do you feel that your education was less than adequate? Were you in special education programming, and how was that experience? Leave us some comments and share your story.

Super post, Need to mark it on Digg
Have a nice day
